Course overview

This qualification develops the understanding of the principles of decontamination and improves practical skills in cleaning and waste management. The content of the course will expand knowledge relating to health and safety whilst also providing insight into infection control and regulations, such as Reporting of Injuries and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) and Control of Hazardous Substances to Health (COSHH).

Unlike some other cleaning training courses, this course is available via distance learning – with no need to attend classroom training sessions.

Suitable for

This course is suitable for learners aged 14 and over who wish to improve their understanding of decontamination, health and safety whilst learning practical cleaning skills.

Learning outcomes

Following this course, students will learn how to deal with routine and non-routine waste, health and safety for the cleaning and support services industry, working with customers and others in the cleaning and support services industry,  infection control, RIDDOR and COSHH in cleaning settings, principles of decontamination, cleaning and waste management and cleaning of interiors and washrooms.

  • The procedure for transferring hazardous and non hazardous waste
  • Health and safety legislation
  • The importance of the correct use of equipment, materials and chemicals and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • How to communicate properly with customers
  • How to contribute to effective teamwork
  • The importance of positive behaviour and attitude
  • Procedures for handling difficult situations
  • The importance of maintaining a clean environment
  • Workplace schedules
  • Standards of hygiene
  • Decontamination processes
  • Effective waste management
  • Preparing for cleaning interiors and exteriors
  • Correct methods and cleaning to prescribed standards

Course requirements

It can be delivered remotely or in a classroom environment, to suit the requirements of the student.

To attend remotely, students will require the following equipment:

  • PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (a webcam is preferred but not essential).
  • Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome).
  • An email account for file sharing.

To complete this course, candidates will need to be observed completing specific cleaning skills as part of Unit 6. This can be done in a workplace where a manager or supervisor could act as a witness, or for those who are not currently in employment, by an appropriate witness.
