This qualification will give you an introductory understanding of childcare through exploring young children’s development. It covers the value and importance of play, how to plan a healthy diet and the importance of safeguarding and welfare.

This course is suitable for students aged 14 and over. It is ideal for anyone who currently works in, or would like to work in, the education and health and social care sectors.
By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of child development, the value and importance of play to young children and safeguarding.
- Young children’s development:
- The stages of development of young children from birth to three years
- Positive environments that support the development of young children
- The value of play to young children:
- The necessity of play to young children’s development
- Demonstrating different play activities suitable for young children from birth to five years old
- Importance of play for early learning:
- The vital importance of creativity and imagination in the development of a child
- Organising a cooking activity for children
- The importance of books and stories in child development
- Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people:
- Legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people (including e-safety)
- What action to take when children or young people are injured or ill
- Recognising emergency procedures
- How to respond to suspicions that a child or young people has been abused, harmed or bullied
- Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet:
- How to make healthy and nutritional food choices for children
- Food labels and what to look out for to ensure that children are given a balanced diet
Candidates will require the following equipment for distance learning:
- PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (a webcam is preferred but not essential)
- Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome)
- An email account for file sharing
