Those who need the skills to be able to communicate their position, opinions and feelings confidently and assertively in existing, new or perhaps challenging situations.

Learning outcomes

This course investigates how to recognise different behavioural styles and the benefits of using assertive techniques when communicating and negotiating with colleagues, management and customers. During the course, you will participate in a number of practical activities, applying the techniques covered during the course.

Module Two - Behavioural Styles:

  • DiSC behavioural analysis
  • Implications of behavioural styles
  • Your style under normal and pressure circumstances

Module Three - Understanding Behaviour:

  • What is assertiveness?
  • The difference between assertion and aggression
  • Understanding passive and aggressive behaviour
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Turning limiting beliefs into assertive ones
  • Recognising triggers
  • The steps to assertiveness

Module Four - Preparing to Assert Yourself:

  • Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Effective use of voice and words
  • Establishing rapport

Module Five - Assertive Techniques:

  • Basic assertion
  • Objective vs subjective
  • Empathy and lead in assertiveness
  • Consequence assertiveness
  • Using the DESC script
  • Discrepancy assertion

Module Six - Assertion in Difficult Situations:

  • Handling requests
  • Expressing doubts and disagreements
  • Being assertive with aggressive people
  • Disagreeing with others positively
  • Averting conflict

  • The four colour behavioural styles matrix

Course requirements

This course can be delivered remotely or in a classroom environment, to suit your requirements.

Delegates must have the following equipment to attend this training remotely:

  • PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (webcam is preferred but not essential)
  • Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome)
  • An email account for file sharing
