  • Types of interview
  • The process flow chart
  • Writing a ‘person’ specification
  • Relating the ‘person’ specification to the job description
  • Screening CVs and shortlisting candidates
  • Short listing criteria
  • Application processing and evaluation

Planning the Interview:

  • Designing a structured, professional interview
  • Competencies and why they are important
  • Assessing information and behavioural indicators
  • Recognising barriers:
    • Halo/horn effect
    • Stereotyping
    • Unconscious bias
  • Being aware of Equal Opportunities Legislation and policies
  • Planning for remote (virtual) and face to face interviews

Developing Questions and Interview Criteria:

  • Identifying variables and developing questions
  • Factors to probe
  • Assessing skills, traits and qualifications.

Purpose of Behavioural Interviewing Questions:

  • Organising questions
  • Using the SOARA (situation, objectives, action, results, aftermath) – funnel technique
  • Formulating an interview scoring method

Conducting the Formal Interview:

  • Setting the correct environment for undertaking the interview – remote and face to face
  • Developing rapport and showing interest
  • Giving the interviewee a reason to participate
  • Asking questions in a prescribed order and manner
  • Effective listening skills and positive body language signals
  • Helping the interviewee to be responsive
  • Obtaining sufficient answers
  • Showing sensitivity to interviewee burden

Course requirements

This course can be delivered remotely or in a classroom environment, to suit your requirements.

Delegates must have the following equipment to attend this training remotely:

  • PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (webcam is preferred but not essential)
  • Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome)
  • An email account for file sharing
