This qualification aims to provide knowledge of several different Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs), how they are diagnosed and how individuals can be supported. Candidates will develop an understanding of the positive aspects and strengths or individuals with specific learning difficulties in addition to exploring the barriers they may face.

This course is suitable for students aged 14 and over. It is ideal for anyone who currently works in, or would like to work in, the education and health and social care sectors.

By the end of the course, candidates will understand SpLDs and the effects of them, you will know how to gain an early diagnosis and you will be able to support individuals with SpLDs.

  • How Specific Learning Difficulties affect an individual’s life and those of others around them
  • How the attitudes of others can impact the individuals 
  • The the strengths and barriers an individual may experience
• Understanding the diagnosis of Specific Learning Difficulties:
  • The importance of gaining an early diagnosis
  • The impact of delayed or non-diagnosis
  • The diagnosis process and the professionals involved
• Understanding how to support individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties:
  • How to support an individual with a Specific Learning Difficulty in a variety of settings
  • Different coping strategies
  • Assistive technology that can be used as support
• Understanding the context of Specific Learning Difficulties:
  • How attitudes, legislation and services have evolved over time to support individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties

Candidates will require the following equipment for distance learning:

• PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (a webcam is preferred but not essential)
• Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome)
• An email account for file sharing
